The direct answer
Choose a documented finite map buffer separately from the worker-thread limit, and supply trusted bounded input and result handling around it. Follow the API’s result-yield boundary rather than inventing admission credit from guessed worker completion. These settings do not establish a total memory limit, task permission, spend cap or sandbox.
Give the producer and consumer their own boundaries
A fictional AI console prepares small metadata labels from four already authorized note references, I-1 through I-4. This step uses a trusted fixed local function; it calls no model or external tool. The team wants useful incremental processing without first retaining an entire large input collection or accumulating every output forever.
This worksheet selects ThreadPoolExecutor.map under the Python 3.15 documentation profile below. The proposed settings are two worker threads and a finite buffer of three. These invented configuration choices are discussion inputs, not measured peaks, recommended production values or memory estimates.
Require a trusted lazy input iterator that produces bounded admitted records, a trusted fixed worker and a trusted bounded consumer. Each is application code with its own behavior: laziness does not make an arbitrary iterator, object callback or worker harmless. Do not accept model-generated functions or arbitrary user iterators under this profile.
All cases are PROPOSED_UNRUN. No iterator, executor, future, thread, worker, timer, map operation or runtime fixture was constructed or exercised. Documentation review is the only source of library-behavior evidence here.
Separate the documented controls before choosing numbers
The official concurrent.futures body opened for this guide identifies Python 3.15.2. It defines max_workers as the worker-thread limit. For Executor.map, inputs are collected immediately unless buffersize is specified. That parameter, added in 3.14, limits submitted tasks whose results have not been yielded; a full buffer pauses input iteration until a result is yielded.
The boundary is therefore not simply “a worker finished.” Keep result production and result consumption as separate observations in the proposed review. Selecting fewer threads does not by itself select the documented input-buffer behavior.
This article does not inspect implementation internals or establish an exact instantaneous outstanding-task count. A configured buffer of three must not become a claim of exactly three resident tasks, zero prefetch, a particular internal queue size or a physical allocation ceiling. Verify actual runtime applicability separately before using the profile.
Use a small admission and retention worksheet
Invent task record T-A with the four permitted input references, selected worker/buffer settings, an input-size policy, a result-size policy and a consumer-retention policy. Keep source authority outside those numeric settings: a bounded submission can still name an unauthorized document.
For the useful positive plan, the producer yields an admitted reference when the supported map progression requests it. The consumer receives a result, checks its association and allowed shape, records only the necessary outcome, then stops retaining the result when the workflow no longer needs it. This describes intended application ownership, not proof that Python immediately frees memory.
Do not calculate a memory budget by multiplying the buffer setting by one nominal item size. Input backing stores, worker scratch space, object overhead, exceptions and the consumer’s retained data have separate footprints. A small reference can also point at a large object unless the actual worker read is bounded independently.
A lazy wrapper over a previously materialized collection does not erase that collection. Likewise, appending all yielded values to another list creates a new accumulation path. Review both ends of the map, rather than congratulating a finite setting in its middle.
Treat interrupted progress as incomplete, not cancelled work
The same documentation places the map timeout relative to the original Executor.map call, not a fresh allowance for each retrieved result. A worker exception is raised when that value is retrieved. Those are result-consumption rules, not evidence that all underlying work stopped.
For T-A, an exception, timeout or abandoned consumer must leave an explicit incomplete disposition. Do not silently restart all four inputs, claim every result was consumed or infer cancellation from a page closing. Any recovery or cleanup mechanism needs its own supported implementation review; none is supplied here.
Keep the selected worker free of downstream model, network or business effects as a separately reviewed prerequisite. The map buffer neither establishes that property nor settles financial usage, current object rights or exact-once execution.
Review eight inert producer-consumer cards
| Inert condition | Required decision |
|---|---|
| Four admitted references; trusted bounded producer and consumer; explicit finite map buffer | Permit the documented incremental preprocessing plan and validate each consumed result association. |
| Only two worker threads are selected; map buffering is unspecified | Do not claim bounded input collection; choose the supported buffer policy explicitly. |
| Caller materialized every input before mapping | Account for that retained source separately; the map setting cannot retroactively constrain it. |
| A worker may have finished, but the map has not yielded a needed result to the consumer | Follow the documented buffer/yield relation; do not invent extra admission credit from guessed completion. |
| Consumer stores every result indefinitely | Reject the retention plan or impose a separately reviewed bound; finite submission buffering is insufficient. |
| One admitted reference expands into an excessive worker input or result | Apply the separate data boundary; neither worker count nor buffer validates byte size. |
| Timeout, exception or abandoned consumption interrupts T-A | Record incomplete with supported evidence; no automatic replay or stopped-work assertion. |
| Another map, executor or direct submission bypasses T-A | Exclude that path from this contract; a per-map setting is not a service-wide quota. |
Keep the useful claim smaller than a resource guarantee
A future review can trace configuration, admitted source records and consumed outcomes using synthetic labels. Actual allocation, timing, implementation-level admission peaks and lifecycle behavior require separately authorized evidence; this worksheet measures none of them. Do not treat it as a parser isolation design or protection from hostile computation.
The existing financial reservation guide answers a different question. So do current authorization, upload constraints and durable job queuing. Preserve those controls instead of treating a finite map buffer as their replacement.
Boundary is prelaunch and does not claim a shipped preprocessing scheduler or universal resource governor. Its synthetic policy evidence concerns different behavior. Useful incremental results remain a narrower claim than bounded process memory, safe arbitrary code or completed AI work.
