The direct answer
Keep watch-target identity, current pathname mapping, subtree coverage and queue-loss status separate. Withdraw a watcher-maintained inventory’s eligibility when those receipts fail, and require independently supported reconciliation. A quiet watch cannot establish immutable bytes, complete coverage or permission to use a file.
A familiar pathname can hide a different object
A fictional preprocessing service keeps a metadata inventory for an application-owned local file tree. Its dashboard says a note is watched, so a helper assumes the pathname still identifies the monitored input. That assumption combines three questions: which object was associated with the watch, what the name currently denotes, and which parts of the tree are covered.
Select one trusted publisher and an independently established complete, frozen inventory revision I-A. This is a bounded metadata review, not a live-tree content validator. It excludes network filesystems, untrusted producers, links, mounts, devices and a general recursive-watcher implementation. The anchored-open profile keeps its separate frozen-store prerequisites.
All references below are paper labels. No file, pathname, watch, event, descriptor, scan or filesystem fixture was created.
Keep the documented monitoring limits compact
The inotify manual describes inode-based file monitoring. Directory monitoring is not recursive; new subdirectories may contain files before their watches exist. Queue overflow loses events. Unread identical events can coalesce, so counts are unreliable. Event filenames may already be stale when processed. The manual advises consistency checking and cache rebuilding when needed.
The opened page identifies Linux man-pages 6.19, dated 14 February 2026. It establishes no installed kernel, filesystem support or correct application observer. This worksheet implements none of the manual’s recovery examples.
Review object and name associations separately
Invent an independently known file object F-A and a distinct replacement F-B. At an earlier review, name N-A denoted F-A and watch association W-A referred to F-A. Later, the publisher’s separate evidence says N-A denotes F-B while F-A has another name. These are stipulated teaching conditions, not observed rename results.
| Receipt | Earlier association | Later paper condition |
|---|---|---|
| Watched object | W-A refers to F-A | No evidence W-A covers F-B. |
| Current name | N-A denotes F-A | N-A now denotes F-B. |
| Inventory permission | I-A admits a declared revision | The changed association requires reconciliation. |
This applies the documented object boundary to invented facts. Do not transfer eligibility by copying N-A’s display label onto F-B. The service needs actual supported evidence of the current association; this article supplies no identity collector, rename-pair matcher or pathname-reconstruction algorithm.
Likewise, a directory entry observed in an event is not the admitted bytes for a model request. Keep content freezing, bounded validation, actual opening and current rights in their existing independent contracts.
Withdraw an incomplete inventory claim
For this original application policy, the inventory has explicit states: eligible under a supported complete receipt, held for a known discrepancy, or unknown because required evidence is unavailable. A hold is useful information. It prevents a convenient cached label from silently becoming permission to consume a different revision.
Require the receipt to name the intended subtree, every required coverage association, observation lifetime and any loss disposition. A top-level “watching” indicator cannot substitute for that inventory. If a required field fails, withdraw incremental eligibility for the affected instance and scope rather than mark a convenient subset healthy without evidence.
Re-establishing eligibility requires a separately supported reconciliation against trusted publisher state. Actual completeness, freeze coordination, observer progress and event association must be independently established. Neither a quiet interval nor a scan placed near watch setup is an atomicity certificate. No such reconciliation mechanism is implemented here.
The ordinary positive is limited: I-A and the current object, coverage and observer receipts agree; all actual prerequisites hold; the metadata inventory becomes eligible for separate file-admission review. No file content, worker execution or model result becomes approved from monitoring alone.
For an operator, report the specific missing receipt and affected revision instead of a single red or green service light. Unrelated independently eligible inputs may remain useful under their own evidence; do not repair one unresolved association by copying another job’s status.
Use eight inert inventory cards
| Invented condition | Proposed disposition |
|---|---|
| 1. Complete I-A and every independent receipt and prerequisite hold | Conditionally admit only this metadata inventory. |
| 2. The later F-A/F-B worksheet condition applies | Withdraw the old name association; do not relabel the watch. |
| 3. Required subtree coverage is missing | Hold that inventory scope pending supported reconciliation. |
| 4. The instance reports overflow | Withdraw incremental completeness; preserve the loss disposition. |
| 5. One event is offered as an exact activity count | Reject that interpretation. |
| 6. Name mapping, event association or observer lifetime is unknown | Keep the affected receipt unestablished. |
| 7. A quiet observer is offered as stable-content or completed-publication proof | Require the separate content and publication evidence. |
| 8. Inventory fits but object rights or consumer admission fail | Deny use independently. |
Keep monitoring smaller than a security or durability result
The sealed-input contract still owns its selected byte-stability policy. The publication contract still separates name visibility from synchronization. This worksheet changes neither, and supplies no claim that every access, mutation or actor was observed.
Actual kernel and filesystem applicability, object mapping, complete subtree coverage, queue capture, consumer progress, publisher freeze, race coordination and current rights are unimplemented or unknown. Any missing prerequisite blocks real admission. Record minimized revision and disposition references rather than note contents or a full path history in routine logs.
No watcher, event parser, scan, read loop, rename operation, kernel inspection, recovery process, API, model call or candidate runtime was exercised. Only the declared manual body was read. Boundary remains prelaunch with planned request-path checks; its existing synthetic policy evidence does not implement this file-inventory observer.
